“Me, a princess? Shut up!” Born to a fairly wealthy family in Brooklyn, New York where her father worked as a lawyer and her mother, Kate McCauley, worked as an actress, Anne Hathaway was inspired to take the stage after spending her childhood watching her mother perform. First dabbling in drama at her Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, by the time she was a senior in high school Hathaway had already set herself apart from her peers with award nominations for her performances in plays like Once Upon a Mattress, Jane Eyre and Gigi.
Still unsure of her future as an actress after high school, Hathaway studied English literature at Vassar College for a few semesters before transferring to New York University’s famed Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Admitting the transfer was one of the best decisions in her early life, she later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was the first teenager admitted into The Barrow Group Theater Company’ acting program, which is an outstanding achievement.
By the time she was 16, Hathaway’s acting career was slowly picking up steam as she made her television debut on Fox’s Get Real which, even though it was canceled after one season, was just enough to jumpstart her career. With even more confidence than before, Hathaway auditioned for and secured starring roles in The Princess Diaries and Disney’s The Other Side of Heaven. Since then, her popularity has snowballed with critically acclaimed performances in films like Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and The Intern that have left many to compare her acting style to the late Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn.
Aside from her worldwide recognition and mainstream popularity, the superstar has dabbled in various factions of show business but has arguably found the most success and wealth in acting with over 40 projects to her name, over 100 award nominations and just as many awards including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy. However, while the trophies are certainly nice, Hathaway’s cash flow is even nicer with her annual salary averaging around $5 million, which easily pads her $35 million net worth and her already modest lifestyle.
Despite her growing success in the spotlight over the last 17 years and as if to further prove her modesty, the 33-year-old actress recently downsized after selling her luxurious 2,300 square foot loft in New York City, which she shared with her husband, Adam Shulman, and their eight-month old son, Jonathan. Instead of going bigger like most celebrities tend to do, Hathaway did the exact opposite and signed on the dotted line with Shulman on a more modest 1,200 square foot penthouse in the Upper West Side.
Setting the couple back a cool $2.55 million which, after the sale of their $4.25 million loft, netted them a $1.7 million profit, Hathaway and Shulman couldn’t pass up the bargain and the penthouse’s long list of amenities especially since they signed the papers a month before her son was born. Ultimately move-in ready with very little to update or upgrade, the penthouse might be smaller but it is even more exquisite with two sky-lit bedrooms, contemporary bathrooms and a sky-lit kitchen with what feels like sky-high ceilings. Offering unrivaled views of the city with oversized windows, the home also features a modern fireplace, incredible interior design and a breathtaking private rooftop terrace. Sounds like the perfect setting for a Big Apple fairytale and a happily ever after, doesn’t it?
Much like her modesty when it comes to her homes, Hathaway’s taste in cars is also on point as you’ll find two gorgeous Audis in her garage—a modest matte black A5 and a flashy silver R8. While she has more than enough money to buy whatever car her heart desires, she spends the majority of her time behind the wheel of her A5 when she’s not being chauffeured around on a private jet or in a limousine.
Obviously far from being a flashy spender and with very little else actually known about her personal life and her spending habits, what the media does report is that Hathaway is incredibly generous with both her time and money. Often praised for her philanthropy since her early days in Hollywood, she has donated thousands of dollars and countless volunteer hours to over 25 charities and nonprofit organizations including The Creative Coalition, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The Lollipop Theatre Network.
Going above and beyond both on the silver screen and behind the scenes when the cameras have long stopped rolling, Hathaway is truly a remarkable and talented woman whose love of the industry runs deep, much like her commitment to making the world a better place. And, in our opinion, that makes her beautiful on the inside and out regardless of the size of her bank account, the house she lives in or the awards on her mantle.
