"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." On November 4, 2008, history was made when Democratic candidate Barack Obama was elected to be the first African-American President of the United States, beating out John McCain. The former Illinois Senator would then take office for four years, easily winning his reelection bid in 2012. On January 20, 2017, Obama’s time in office came to an end, but not without some memorable moments left behind.Advertisements:

Obama was the president that passed the Affordable Care Act (otherwise known as Obamacare), as well as the large tax relief act, and he guided the country through the end of the Great Recession. There were trying times for the country during Obama’s presidency, and along the way he was a polarizing figure, but that’s to be expected when half of the nation agrees with everything you say while the other half thinks every syllable you say is wrong.

Just like any president in terms of IQ, Barack Obama’s numbers were inflated greatly by his supporters to the point where Albert Einstein would blush while his detractors made it seem like he’s a complete dullard. Even Donald Trump said that his own IQ was “much higher” than Obama’s, even though he never provided an actual number. Ever since Obama took office in early 2009, he was a target of the current president for his IQ.

Trump is far from the only Obama critic, though, and that’s for sure. Even United Kingdom newspaper Empire News released a report in 2015 that Obama scored an IQ of 102, which would have made him the lowest scoring president of the past century. They even attributed a quote to his former Press Secretary Josh Earnest, saying that “the next time President Obama bypasses Congress with an executive order, and you’re about to say something cruel, racist or otherwise completely ignorant, remember that he’s just a regular guy getting things done for you.”

The entire article was fabricated, and a lot of Americans got an education in the fact that Empire News is an entertainment paper, not a news source. That didn’t stop people from sharing the report online hoping to make Obama look bad, though, at least until they learned about the truth. Even afterward, people were still left wonder what Obama’s IQ actually was.

Obama did have some quotes that portrayed himself as being quite smart, though not as boastful as certain other presidents. “I think that I’m a better speechwriter than my speechwriters,” Obama once said. “I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m going to think I’m a better political director than my political director.”

You can take it that Obama wasn’t actually talking about IQ when referring to those that were working around him, but rather being more tenacious at his job. You don’t exactly have to be the smartest person in the room to be the best candidate for a position. This quote came at the beginning of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, so it’s also possible that he was playing himself up simply as a hard worker.

A large study in 2006 that was released by Dean Keith Simonton evaluated the presidents of the past, which meant that Obama wasn’t included as he didn’t take office for nearly three more years. So to get an accurate estimate, you would need to take a look at his educational successes more than anything.

Obama was raised by his mother Ann Dunham and father Barack Obama, Sr. His mother was an anthropologist while his father was a senior governmental economist in Kenya. Though they were both very well educated, it’s hard to say that Obama had as many strings pulled to get him through college as other former presidents have had. The younger Obama bounced around schools, ending up in Hawaii and was even bilingual, able to speak fluent Indonesian.

When he graduated high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles where he attended Occidental College, a private school that ranks among the highest liberal arts colleges in the United States. After two years, Obama transferred to the Ivy League’s Columbia University where he earned his Bachelor’s of the Arts while studying political science. There was a lot of intrigue in 2012 as Obama was asked to reveal his college transcripts.

He was hardly the first president to keep them under wraps, and definitely won’t be the last. Students around him described him as intelligent and social, getting along with a lot of different groups. Overall, Obama was a bit of an enigma during his formative college years, and it was recent enough that there are still plenty of people that were around him that have vivid stories.

Then, you look at his time with Harvard University where he started in 1988, and you start to get a sense that he is indeed very intelligent. He would obtain his Juris Doctor from the Harvard Law School, which is no easy feat, and even became the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. Other former presidents of the review have included seven Supreme Court justices, four cabinet secretaries and many other officials and journalists.

Before becoming president, Obama would also work as a civil rights attorney and was a law professor at the University of Chicago. Between his academic record and his reported ACT score of 30, we can make a solid estimate that Obama’s IQ is right around 130. That would put him in about the top 2.3 percent of people, and slightly above average for a United States President.
