"There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America." 1976 was one of those strange years where southern states voted for the Democratic Party while the west went red. A lot of that had to do with the Watergate scandal, and the fact that Gerald R. Ford (Republican) leaned more to the left than most members of the party. So what does that have to do with Bill Clinton?

Well, since that odd election, the state of Arkansas has only voted for one Democratic candidate for the presidency. That came in 1992 and 1996 when the state voted for their native son, Bill Clinton. Clinton would win both of those elections en route to becoming the 42nd President of the United States, serving from January 1993 to January 2001. A presidency that involved scandal in its second term, Clinton is still remembered fondly by a lot of people, especially on the Democratic side of things.

Clinton really knew how to connect with the people, presenting that warming southern charm that registered with a majority of the nation. His charisma appealed to both older and younger generations, which allowed him to easily win two elections. However, there were some that thought he was a bit “simple” and had the nickname Bubba. In the north, not many people knew what that meant, and even used is as a term of disapproval.

When it comes to Clinton’s intelligence, though, you can take a look at his past and his presidency to get an idea of how smart he was. Clinton’s parents had money, but weren’t exactly considered rich. Clinton’s mother was a nurse and his father was a traveling salesman who passed away just months before Clinton was born. With his stepfather being a car salesman on top of that, Clinton didn’t lean on connections to succeed academically.

Clinton was an ideal student as a youngster, reading countless books while participating in many different school groups and was a fine musician. He was more interested in becoming a professional musician, and even wanted to be a doctor, but said that he became more interested in public service and law.

Not having a lot of money as a teenager, Clinton was still able to attend Georgetown University thanks to academic scholarships. In 1968, he received his Bachelor of Science in foreign service, while serving as class president on two occasions. Upon graduating, Clinton won the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University College in Oxford, England. There have only been a few thousands to receive the scholarship that many students apply for each year.

Clinton had switched programs due to thinking that he would be drafted for the Vietnam War, so he never received his degree and returned to the United States, all while turning down the opportunity to study at the Yale Law School at first, and then would attend the college where he received his Juris Doctor.

With all of that considered, you’d have to think that Clinton was incredibly intelligent, leaning heavily on scholarships compared to family money. One analyst that was impressed was Dean Keith Simonton, who gave Clinton an estimated IQ of 149 then he evaluated all of the presidents in 2006. This put Clinton toward the top of the list, finishing sixth and just one IQ point out of second place. This would put him firmly in the genius category.

Clinton used his education to become a law professor and immediately went into politics, becoming the Arkansas Attorney General and then the Governor of Arkansas in 1978. This happened when he was just 32 years old, earning him the title of the youngest governor in the entire country at the time. Clinton was a shooting star, though many members of the younger generation seem to forget how much of a wunderkind Clinton actually was.

It was clear that Clinton had a high intelligence when he was just a child, learning how to read when he was just three years old. He was also speaking at a middle school level before even enrolling in school, and was taking classes well above his grade level. Clinton was also noted for his fine public speaking skills, which made him an important ally for his school’s debate club and has him listed as one of the best presidential orators in the nation’s history.

Reports have said that Clinton would simplify his speeches for public audiences, which gave him more of the “down home” feel. People seem to forget how solid he was as a communicator, since the first speech that comes to mind when thinking about Clinton tends to be the one that followed the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

One thing that should be noted about Clinton’s IQ, since we haven’t gotten an exact number from an IQ test, was that he nearly won the National Merit Scholarship. There’s a test that’s required for the scholarship that to qualify as a finalist, you’d almost certainly have to have an IQ that ranks 140 or higher. Add in the fact that he won a Rhodes Scholarship and Clinton is undoubtedly intelligent.

So while some might have called him “Slick Willy” or “Bubba,” Bill Clinton was truly one of the most accomplished presidents academically, and that translates into a high IQ. Where he ranks all-time is certainly up for debate, but with his record in education, it’s hard to deny that Clinton was among the smartest to ever call the White House home.
