This was an old post. 2 iterations of Macbook Airs have come out since then. I bought one in late 2010. I don't think it's worth the premium, but it does what I want.

Hey Karol,

Great post... loved it and am checking out some of the products you're "selling." Am particularly interested in your laptop. Do you still recommend it? I'm also considering the MacBook Air... am curious as to why you said they suck?

Re: comments in your article about sheep and wool :

* Ever considered how uncomfortable those sheep could become if they aren't shorn every year - shearing those sheep actually improves their comfort levels, and resulting welfare;

* What would happen to all those sheep, cows and pigs out there currently being farmed, if the whole world went vegetarian tomorrow ?? They won't be pensioned off and settled into a sheep and cattle retirement home ~ a vegetarian future would mean dozens of animals becoming extinct because you have no need for them;

* Going to extremes - the difference between a vegetarian and a true strict vegan ?
Vegans can't eat honey, yoghurt, cheese or any other foodstuffs that have come in contact with any animals or animal byproducts - including manures (but then, if you have removed the livestock, there goes your main source of manures !!);

* No more pets !! A strictly true "vegan" (as opposed to vegetarians..) will not have any pets nor work/companion animals ~ no cats, horses, pet birds or reptiles, no dogs of any kind ~ including seeing-eye dogs and companion dogs !!!

* Not that it would matter anyway ~ in a true and pure "vegan" world there is no meat to feed those cats and dogs. So they too have to follow the afore-mentioned livestock into extinction...

Do you self-declared "vegans" ~ as opposed to vegetarians ~ really want/prefer to live in a world bereft of pets, companion animals, wool and leather, as well as animal-sourced foods..

That would be a sad world, indeed.

Thanks for the list. I just started out on a six-or-so-month trek and modelled my kit off yours. http://www.vancewoodward.com/journal/2011/7/16/ultra-light-packing-gear-list-for-south-america.html
