In the world of cosmetics, there are a handful of names that have reached superstardom, and Lauder is definitely one of them. Estee Lauder, who is nearly 15 years removed from her death, is still an iconic name in the industry. Like many that have become self-made billionaires, Lauder’s company that she started so many years ago has remained mostly in the family despite aggressive growth throughout the years. This includes Jane Lauder, one of Estee’s granddaughters.

Estee Lauder was a woman from Queens, New York that had worked with her uncle who was a chemist to develop cosmetics. Before that, she had worked with her father in the retail department, but focused solely on uncle John’s business once she graduated high school. Estee helped the business to grow and eventually launched a company of her own based around cosmetics that would become the world’s leader in the industry.

Estee had two children during her life, sons named Leonard and Ronald. Ronald was the younger one of the two, though he’d go into politics rather than cosmetics. He served as the United States Ambassador to Austria under Ronald Reagan, and has been the President of the World Jewish Congress for over a decade. Along with longtime wife Jo Carole Knopf, Ronald Lauder had two daughters. Aerin Lauder was born in 1970, with Jane being born in 1973. Growing up, like many heiresses, she was being groomed for the business that her grandmother had started.

“She was the most determined person I know and probably never took no for an answer,” Jane said of her late grandmother. “She believed in her business, she believed in what she was doing and she taught me that in order to succeed you have to be able to drive your business and never take no for an answer.”

Before entering the business world, Lauder had focused on her education while growing up in Manhattan, New York. Once she graduated from high school, Lauder ended up on the opposite side of the United States, attending the prestigious Stanford University where she graduated in the mid 1990s. Lauder then worked in advertising before committing to Estee Lauder Companies “for life,” saying that she knew when she joined the family business, she’d be there for good.

In 1996, Lauder officially joined the Estee Lauder Companies, and married businessman Kevin Warsh, moving back to Manhattan. Like many that join a family company at a young age, Lauder had to learn the ropes of how the company operated, which landed her in a lot of different positions over the years. Meanwhile, Lauder was already one of the wealthiest people that had worked in the company as she owned millions of shares that were inherited, and still does to this day.

Lauder has seen her net worth grow in recent years, as she became a billionaire in the early 2010s after having been estimated to be worth $1.2 billion. Since then, Lauder’s seen a steady growth to her net worth, which got her to over $2 billion for the first time in late 2017 and is now believed to be worth $3 billion. This has moved the heiress up the chain into the top 1,000 richest people in the world, and getting close to the top 250 in the United States. There’s still a ways to go before she becomes one of the 10 richest women in the world, but she has the advantage of time being much younger than many ahead of her at 45 years old.

Many brands within Estee Lauder have had Jane in charge of certain divisions, as she’s been the global president and general manager of several of these successful brands over the past five years. She’s certainly worked her way up the ladder, and is only one spot behind the title of senior vice president in the company. She’s also in charge of the popular Clinique brand, which is perhaps the most well-known within Estee Lauder as being visible in malls around the United States.

Lauder has a seat on the board in her company after taking over for her father nearly a decade ago, which should come as no surprise. The board has mostly comprised of family members through the years, which has contributed to their success and continuity. Other family members on the board include Leonard, Ronald and William Lauder. Currently, Estee Lauder Companies have a revenue of more than $11.8 billion with nearly $1.7 billion in income, employing 46,000 people. And, of course, many know the brands such as Bobbi Brown, MAC Cosmetics, Aveda and many more.

In 2018, Lauder also joined the Eventbrite, which is a United States business based out of San Francisco that allows people to create events and sell tickets without using the major secondary sales markets. “I’m thrilled to be working with a brand that understands the incredible power of human connection and enables creators to facilitate important real-life moments of people coming together around various passions, purposes, curiosities and causes,” she said. “I look forward to helping Eventbrite continue to grow both its brand awareness and affinity around the globe.”
