There was a time when actor John Krasinski was a staple of the comedy genre. Thanks to being one of the lead stars on a popular sitcom and starring in several comedy movies, not many knew Krasinski had the range that he does. Then, in recent years, Krasinski has had massive hits in action and horror, while also having almost everything he touches turn to gold. It’s been a fun ride for Krasinski, and it’s just beginning.Advertisements:

Krasinski is a Boston guy through and through, being born in the city on October 20, 1979. His experience in acting began very early and he was both classically trained while also working on his improv skills growing up. He was also a star student, getting into Ivy League school Brown after years of working on his acting skills. It was also in college that Krasinski had his first role as an extra in the 2000 film “State and Main”.

Over the next couple of years, Krasinski added more minor roles in film, including “Kinsey” and “Taxi”. Then, in 2005, Krasinski had his breakout year. Not only did he add the film “Jarhead” to his resume, but he was cast as the charismatic Jim Halpert on the NBC sitcom, “The Office”. Krasinski was part of the popular series all the way through, appearing in the over 200 episodes that aired, and is still getting watched on a daily basis on Netflix.

“The Office” is based on the United Kingdom series of the same name created by Ricky Gervais, and the original is what drew Krasinski to the role. “I actually wanted to join the U.S. version because of the U.K. show. It was my favorite show ever,” he said. “And I said it was so perfect, that the Americans would only screw it up. I said that in my audition, and the guy I was talking to was like, ‘I’m the guy creating the show and will be your boss. Not anymore.’ And it turns out I got the job.”

While “The Office” was becoming perhaps the most popular comedy of the new millennium, Krasinski also started to get more prominent roles in film. He went from supporting actor to starring in movies such as the romantic comedies “It’s Complicated” and “License to Wed”, as well as independent films like “Smiley Face” and “Away We Go”. Voice acting was also a calling card for Krasinski as he entered the “Monsters Inc.” and “Shrek” franchises.

“The Office” came to a tearful end in 2013, with Krasinski staying on television with guest appearances in “Arrested Development” and “BoJack Horseman”. More serious films also followed, such as “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”. Krasinski, of course, has been incredibly busy over the past few years.

He’s gotten behind the camera so that he could become a producer, which includes both the popular celebrity showdown show “Lip Sync Battle” and “Dream Corp, LLC”. Since 2016, he’s played the title role on the “Jack Ryan” series based on the Tom Clancy novels. On the big screen he’s had plenty of recent success to go along with it, producing the Academy Award winning “Manchester by the Sea” while also starring in “Detroit” and the lauded horror film “A Quiet Place”.

Speaking of the supernatural horror, Krasinski co-starred in the film with his wife Emily Blunt. The actress and Krasinski have been married since 2010, having two children in recent years. Even though that’s typically enough to keep a couple busy for years, Krasinski and Blunt haven’t slowed down at all in the acting scene. Krasinski credits his career to his wife, saying “I honestly feel I wouldn’t have this career if I hadn’t met her, because she’s taught me so much about how to go about the business. She’s my secret ingredient.”

Naturally, there were some “Office” fans that were disappointed that Krasinski didn’t end up with his on-screen love Jenna Fischer, who played Pam. When there were rumors that the two were together because Fischer said the characters were “‘genuinely in love,” Krasinski had to shoot down the talk. “I’m sure she was trying to say something nice about how genuine the acting relationship was, of bringing a relationship that became that popular on-screen - and I think we both feel it’s such an honor to be a part of that relationship. As far as how she was quoted about saying we were ‘genuinely in love,’ I think that was taken wildly out of context and I feel bad for her.”

As for his transformation, in recent years and getting away from the comedy scene, it hasn’t been about detaching himself from the character in “The Office” so many people connect him with. “None of those things were about running away from Jim,” he said. “Jim is one of those things that, I know at the end of my career, I’ll still be most known for. And that’s awesome. That’s an honor. But I wanted to try different things. I wanted to set myself up to explore things that were scary and things I wasn’t sure I was going to be good at.” As it turns out, he’s been pretty good at them so far.
