"The party don't start til I walk in." They say that you should never judge a book by its cover, and that’s especially true in the case of pop singer Kesha. Born as Kesha Sebert (and at one point spelled Ke$ha during her career), she would grow up with a singer mother and got time in the studio to show off her own vocal talents. Not only that, but Kesha was also talented in playing other instruments such as the saxophone.

Attending two different high schools, Kesha says that she felt like she didn’t fit in, but was a very good student when it came to class. “I was very studious,” she said. “I was in the international baccalaureate program, I loved physics and math...I would drive to Belmont (University) and listen to Cold War history classes; I just think it’s so interesting. I was really curious about a lot of things that are much deeper than partying and dancing.”

At the time when Kesha took the SAT, a perfect score would have been 1,600. Kesha was able to get awfully close to that, achieving a score of 1,500. That puts her above many other celebrities that have shared their SAT scores, but nobody seemed to know about it for years. Instead, what they perceived was a party girl that only sang about drinking booze.

Due to her high score on the SAT, Kesha was accepted to attend Columbia University, an Ivy League school that’s not quite easy to get into. Instead of focusing on furthering her education, though, Kesha decided that a music career was the right way to go, so she set out to become a star.

When she was 18 years old, Kesha received her first record contract back in 2005, though it would take a while for her to land her first solo hit. The first big time exposure that Kesha received came in 2009 when she sang on the “Right Round” track by Flo Rida. Then in 2010, Kesha debuted her new album “Monster” that included the smash hit songs “Tik Tok” and “Your Love Is My Drug”.

The decision to leave school to pursue her music career was finally paying off, though she was portraying a sort of character that didn’t seem too intelligent. Kesha says that she cranked up her own personality for her stage persona, though people that met her were quick to see that she wasn’t exactly the same person as she was on stage. Even when talking about her own music, Kesha could be pretty critical. “You can’t take for granted that this is pop music,” she said. “It’s not rocket science, it’s not brain surgery, and I’m gonna stand by the fact that I’m proud of this record. I’m not a moron, so there.”

She has proven time and again that she is indeed not a moron, and her educational background supports that claim. In fact, Kesha is believed to have an IQ level of 140, which would put her into the highly gifted category. Only one out of 400 people (or just 0.25 percent) has an IQ level of 140 or higher, putting Kesha into some pretty rarified air.

Because of her IQ, Kesha would be eligible for a membership with Mensa, as they take the top two percent of people. She would almost be eligible to be a member of the Triple 9 Society that takes the top 0.1 percent of IQ levels, which you can qualify for with an IQ of 146 or an SAT score of 1520.

Kesha has said that “You really can’t stereotype people or put them in boxes, it’s unfair.” It’s certainly true, as many perceived her much differently at the beginning of her career when she was playing more of a character. She still tries to get plenty of reading time in, as well. “But really, the only time I ever get (to read) is when I’m on an airplane - I have a fear of flying, but I actually love flying because it’s the only time I can sleep and it’s the only time I get to read,” she said.

Very open about her personal struggles following 2013, Kesha’s personality has been much more subdued these days. Instead of focusing on songs that pertain to drinking and partying, Kesha has released more mature songs such as “Praying”, which earned her her first Grammy Award nomination.

Kesha is certainly one of the more interesting celebrities that you could ever wish to meet, and surprised many fans by how profound she could be. It was also quite the surprise to learn about her background as a student, causing a lot of us to realize that we scored lower on the SAT than the singer that had song lines such as “Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack.” Again, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover because you never know what’s inside.
