When you think of innovators of the past 50 years, the name that tends to pop up first on a lot of lists is Steve Jobs. The man that co-founded Apple Inc. helped the company to grow into what it is today. With products that broke the mold such as the iPhone and iPod, Apple now has a revenue that’s north of a whopping $265 billion. Jobs would pass away in 2011, leaving behind his four children and only wife, Laurene Powell, that has now become one of the richest women in the world as a result.

Powell isn’t exactly a slouch when it comes to intelligence, herself. She was born on November 6, 1963 in West Milford, New Jersey and was an academic standout while growing up. Once she graduated from high school, Powell attended the Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania, earning her bachelor’s in both political science and economics. From there, she transferred as a graduate student to the prestigious Stanford School of Business, where her life would take an ultimate turn.

While an M.B.A student at Stanford, Powell had attended a lecture at the college that included guest speaker Steve Jobs. At that point, Jobs had already co-founded Apple Inc. and even ousted from the company, years away from rejoining what he helped to start. Before giving his speech, Powell had sat in the front next to Jobs where the two struck up a conversation. After the lecture, Jobs saw Powell in the parking lot, and then asked her out on a date.

The relationship moved quickly, as they were engaged after a short period of time and were married in less than 20 months after meeting. At the time that they were married in March of 1991, Powell was already pregnant. She gave birth to the couple’s only son Reed in September that year, and have had two children (Erin-1995 and Eve-1998) since then. While pregnant with Eve, Jobs had rejoined Apple to become the CEO after the company had experienced financial trouble.

Most people know how it goes from there, as Apple experienced tremendous growth after Jobs regained control. During the late 1990s, new products were developed and finally released in the early 2000s such as the iPod and eventually the iPhone that took over the market. The net worth of the Jobs-Powell family had increased tremendously along the company’s revenue and stock, allowing the family to become billionaires.

Sadly, the success that Jobs enjoyed in his second stint with Apple wouldn’t be long enjoyed. After being diagnosed with a tumor in 2003, he developed pancreatic cancer that ravaged his body. Many knew that his time was short and the company made long term plans to adjust for the future. Jobs ultimately succumbed to his disease in October 2011 at 56 years old, survived by his wife and four children, three of which were with Powell.

After Jobs had passed away, a lot of the fortune was handed over to Powell, who took over his trust that included billions of dollars. Not only were there nearly 40 million shares of Apple that Jobs had left for his widow, but also a decent sized stake of over seven percent in the Walt Disney Company. That stock has risen over the past five years after Disney’s many acquisitions, continuing to add to the net worth of Powell.

It’s currently estimated that Jobs is the sixth richest woman in the entire world, with a net worth of $20.5 billion. In terms of women from the United States, this would put her at third place behind only Alice Walton of Walmart fame and Jacqueline Mars of Mars, Inc. In 2018, she was listed as the 20th richest person in the United States, and was in the top 60 on a global scale. That goes to show you just how successful Apple has been over the past 20 years or so.

While Powell does own a lot of stock in Apple, it’s not the tech company that she spends most of her time with. Instead, she lets those that have been with Apple for much of their careers run the business. Instead, Powell has focused on a lot of different ventures that have also added to her net worth. This has included a natural food company called Terravera, as well as getting into sports with becoming a minority owner of two professional teams based in Washington, D.C. (Wizards and Capitals), as well as the arena the two teams play within.

However, much of Powell’s focus has been in philanthropy as the amount of money that she has is certainly enough to live off of for several generations. Some of her philanthropic work has helped students to enroll in college, as well as supporting media and social justice. Prior to college, students can also enroll in one of the many schools that Powell has helped to build thanks to her “Super School Project.”

Powell’s plans for the future are to lead the type of life that her late husband did as an innovator and world changer. “To do what you want to do, to leave a mark - in a way that you think is important and lasting,” she said. “That’s a life well lived...The innovation and creativity that’s so manifest in the rest of society needs to be turned on our school systems.”
