The Louis-Dreyfus family that includes these two has a history that goes back to 1851, when Leopold Louis-Dreyfus founded the Louis Dreyfus Company in France. Originally, the company focused on cereal trading, and grew into one of the largest agricultural companies in the world, which was no easy task when there weren’t many other trades to be had. Over the years, the Louis Dreyfus Company has remained in the family, who still owns 90 percent of the business. These days, revenue is nearly $60 billion, with around 10 percent of the world’s agriculture coming through the Louis Dreyfus Company that has over 22,000 employees that own the remaining 10 percent of the business.

Louis-Dreyfus herself was born as Margarita Bogdanova, in what was then known as Leningrad in the Soviet Union. Now, that city is of course St. Petersburg, Russia. It wasn’t always easy for Louis-Dreyfus growing up, as she was placed into an orphanage as a child after her parents had tragically passed away and had to forge her own path. A very intelligent person, Louis-Dreyfus did very well in school and studied law, though ultimately working in computer part sales during the 1980s.

While working that job, fate would turn as she was boarding a flight from New York City to Zurich in 1988. She was seated next to Robert Louis-Dreyfus, who at the time was the CEO of his own company. The two struck up a conversation, immediately hitting it off and eventually forming a relationship. In the early 1990s, the couple announced their engagement and were officially married in 1992. That same year, Louis-Dreyfus welcomed her first child, a son named Eric. Six years later, Louis-Dreyfus had twins named Maurice and Kyril.

After getting married and beginning to have children, Louis-Dreyfus shifted her focus away from being in the business world and focused her time on family, being a housewife and mother. Unfortunately, after the twins were born, it was learned that her husband was diagnosed with leukemia, which would result in a long health battle. After a decade of taking the illness head-on, Robert sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 63. Before passing away, Robert left his much of his organization to his wife, instantly making her a billionaire.

As a result of the family fortune, Louis-Dreyfus is now worth an estimated $5 billion, which is actually listed as a slight decrease over recent years. In 2014 and 2015, Louis-Dreyfus was estimated to be worth more than $8 billion, but saw that number drop below $7 billion in 2016, and then into the $5 billion range the following year, where it has remained since. However, Louis-Dreyfus is still in good company as she’s one of the richest women in the world, and finds herself in the 500 richest people on Earth regardless of gender.

Since her late husband’s death, Louis-Dreyfus has been the chairman of the Louis Dreyfus Group while Gonzalo Ramirez Martiarena serves as the CEO. This made Louis-Dreyfus the richest woman born in Russia currently living, and has about two-thirds of control in the Louis Dreyfus Group. Robert’s two sisters received inheritance from Robert’s estate, as well, which made them billionaires but to a much smaller degree.

Now, Louis-Dreyfus lives in Zurich, Switzerland, and started a relationship with Swiss banker Philipp Hildebrand. In early 2016, the couple announced that they were having twins, which was a second occasion for Louis-Dreyfus. On March 20, 2016, they welcomed their first children, Isabella and Arina. Balancing five children that include two very young twins, Louis-Dreyfus has maintained her spot as chairman, with many business ventures under her control.

There are a lot of different operations that the Louis Dreyfus Group has, including agriculture, real estate, banking and more. On top of that, Louis-Dreyfus is actively involved in charitable work, and she herself has dabbled in the sporting world. Louis-Dreyfus’s late husband had owned a professional soccer team in France (Olympique de Marseille). The franchise was under Louis-Dreyfus’s control after his death, though she had sold the team to former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt in 2016.

Louis-Dreyfus has proven to be very business savvy during her time in charge, helping her company to grow. However, she’s a bit modest, saying that “I don’t run the company. It’s management who are running the company.” She added that “A family company needs to have one shareholder with a supermajority. It ensures the orientation of the company is on long-term development as opposed to short-term gain, and the interests of the business are supported in one united voice.”
