Driver was born on January 31, 1970 in London, England to a family that included a mother that had worked in modeling. Early on in her life, Driver started to train for acting, taking classes while in school. She ended up at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, setting her up for her first opportunities. At just 21 years old, Driver was ready to hit the big time, getting her first role in a television commercial.

The first traditional acting role for Driver came in 1990 when she appeared in the television film “God on the Rocks”. Over the course of the next few years, she’d make several one-off TV appearances, as well as some recurring roles. This included shows such as “Kinsey”, “My Good Friend” and “The Day Today”. After making a short film, Driver had her feature film debut in 1995 with “Circle of Friends”.

Later that year, Driver was part of the James Bond blockbuster “GoldenEye” to get her first true big taste of stardom. With that, her movie career took off, and she spent the rest of the 1990s in some very memorable films. She played Skylar in “Good Will Hunting”, and had roles in popular movies such as “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “Sleepers”, in addition to a voice acting role in “Tarzan” as the female lead, Jane.

Driver was very busy in the early 2000s in both film and television. Some of her movies in this time included “Ella Enchanted” and “Beautiful”, and she had TV roles with “Will & Grace” and “The Riches”, which she says is the best role that she’s had to date. All in all, Driver has been in nearly three dozen films that have pulled in more than $1.65 billion at the box office. “Tarzan” was the biggest hit of the bunch, pulling in nearly $450 million worldwide.

Recent years have continued to present acting opportunities for Driver, including a handful of feature film releases such as “Unity”, “The Crash” and most recently with “Spinning Man”. Television has continued to be the most prevalent part of Driver’s career in the past few years. She was cast as part of the main cast in “About a Boy” that premiered in 2014, and was cancelled after 33 episodes. Shortly after its conclusion, Driver has starred in the ABC series “Speechless” that’s drawn favorable reviews and appears to be sticking around on television for the foreseeable future.

Driver’s career has spawned a lot of award nominations throughout the years, which includes some major shows. In 1998, she received an Oscar nomination for “Good Will Hunting”, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe and a pair of Emmy Awards. Driver didn’t win at any of the three major awards shows, but she’s at least received plenty of critical recognition for her work at various minor awards shows.

Despite having such a long career in acting, Driver did acknowledge that music has always been a passion that she wants to pursue more often. In 2004, she released her first album called “Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket”, and followed it up in 2007 with “Seastories” and 2014 with “Ask Me to Dance”. All three albums reached the top 50 of the Billboard Heatseekers charts, with her most recent album nearly reaching the top 10.

What some might not know is that Driver was signed to a record label for the first time when she was still a teenager, but waited until her 30s to release the first album. It was when performing in clubs that she got her first taste of acting, which is how she ended up doing both. “I have always been a musician and an actor,” she said. “I can’t really separate them. I have never really understood the notion of ‘But if you had to choose one…’ I’m an artist, there are multiple mediums for expressing that, everything always developed as one big endeavor as opposed to one coming first or second.”

No matter what she’s partaking in, Driver has stayed busy and continues to find sustained success. “I am in the rare one percent of actors who actually work, which is extraordinary,” she said. “It’s a rarified business that I’m in, and today I am profoundly grateful for that. I say that genuinely, because so many of my friends with whom I went to college and drama school with are eking out an existence.”
