Out of everyone that’s starred in the popular “Game of Thrones” series, perhaps none have enjoyed the type of recent mainstream success outside of the series as Peter Dinklage. Though he was born with dwarfism, Dinklage hasn’t let that hold back his career as he’s been a well respected actor for many years now, racking up a lot of awards along the way. Now, Dinklage is frequently a part of major film franchises, and is certainly considered an A-list talent with a lot of roles in his future.Advertisements:

There aren’t many actors from “Game of Thrones” from the United States, but Dinklage is one of them. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey on June 11, 1969, and both of his parents were working in normal jobs that were far detached from the entertainment world. However, Dinklage knew he wanted to get into entertainment from a very young age, getting into acting almost immediately.

Dinklage spent a lot of his time in school on stage, appearing in several different productions. Throughout high school, Dinklage had the dream of being a professional actor, and went to college in Bennington, Vermont where he furthered his acting training. However, after he had graduated from college with his degree in drama, roles weren’t coming so easily for Dinklage even after moving to New York City. Because of that, Dinklage put his acting plans on hold for several years while he worked a standard office job before deciding to get back into acting on a regular basis.

During the 1990s, Dinklage would have minor film roles in movies such as “Living in Oblivion”, “Safe Men” and “Bullet”. His career hadn’t taken off just yet, as he was still landing these background roles for the most part until the 2000s. Then, things took a turn for the better as Dinklage was cast on shows such as “Oz”, “I’m with Her” and “Entourage” during the early part of the decade. On the big screen, Dinklage added notable roles with movies such as “Tiptoes”, “lf” and “Penelope”.

By the end of the 2000s, more people had come to know who Dinklage was. This was thanks to roles such as “Death at a Funeral”, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” and “Saint John of Las Vegas”. Other television roles that he added during this time also included “Threshold”, “Nip/Tuck” and “30 Rock”. Then, Dinklage finally landed what would be his most important role to date.

That role of course is as Tyrion Lannister in “Game of Thrones”, who has become one of the most popular characters on television since 2011, and was a popular part of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series since back in 1996. Surprisingly, though, it was a role that Dinklage almost passed up on that now pays him millions of dollars. A big reason for that was because Dinklage didn’t want to play the traditional fantasy dwarf role.

When he was approached with an offer for the role from David Benioff, Dinklage admitted that “I had one hesitation,” adding that “Because of the fantasy genre, I told him I didn’t want a really long beard and pointy shoes, and they assured me this character and this world wasn’t that. They told me about his complexity, the fact that he wasn’t a hero or a villain, that he was a womanizer and a drinker, and they painted a flawed and beautiful portrait of him, so I signed on.”

Dinklage has received a lot of recognition for his work on “Game of Thrones”. In 2011, Dinklage was nominated for an Emmy Award for the first time in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Dinklage took home the hardware during that first nomination, and has been nominated in the category every year since, with the exception of 2017. So far, Dinklage has won three Emmy Awards for his role and also added a Golden Globe nomination, as wella s several other award wins for his work both in “Game of Thrones” and outside of the series.

Dinklage’s career has exploded since he was cast on “Game of Thrones”. Shortly after taking on the role, Dinklage started to land movie roles in major franchises. It kicked off when he became a part of the “Ice Age” cast, starring in the film “Continental Drift” in 2012. The next major franchise for Dinklage came with “X-Men”, starring as Bolivar Trask in “Days of Future Past”.

Other major films that Dinklage contributed to included “The Angry Birds Movie”, “Pixels” and the Oscar winning “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. Most recently, Dinklage joined the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe when he became the giant dwarf Eitri in “Avengers: Infinity War”. Coming up, Dinklage will add another “Angry Birds” entry, as well as joining the cast of “The Croods 2”. As for the small screen, Dinklage has added some voice work, as well as making appearances on “Sesame Street”, “Saturday Night Live” and the HBO film “My Dinner with Herve”. He also hasn’t abandoned the stage, with Dinklage continuing to appear in recent productions.

While a role like the one that Dinklage has had on “Game of Thrones” would be considered by many to be a big break that came at the right time, that’s not how Dinklage sees things. “I won’t say I’m lucky,” Dinklage said. “I’m fortunate enough to find or attract very talented people. For some reason, I found them and they found me.”
