Turkey is one of those countries that’s been on the rise in terms of economic power, creating several billionaires in recent years. One family that’s produced some of these billionaires is the Sabanci family. Among them is Serra Sabanci, who is one of the world’s youngest female billionaires. Much of that is thanks to her family’s company, which has become one of the largest and most varied in all of Turkey over time.
Serra Sabanci herself was born on October 9, 1975 to mother Sevda and father Ozdemir Sabanci. Her father Ozdemir was the son of businessman Haci Omer Sabanci, who had founded many companies during his business career. After starting so many successful business, Sabanci decided to make them into a conglomerate, forming the very profitable Sabanci Holding company. To this day, Sabanci Holding is still a world power.
Haci Sabanci had become a self-made man after working blue collar jobs while growing up before getting into the business world. In 1966, he had passed away at the age of 60 in Istanbul, leaving control of the company to Serra’s father Ozdemir. This didn’t hinder the company’s growth in the slightest, as Ozdemir proved to be a savvy business himself, acquiring and starting more businesses within the family’s conglomerate. He was also very intelligent, having received a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology.
Sadly, tragedy would strike in early 1996 as Ozdemir was shot while in his office at Sabanci Towers. Although the building is heavily guarded, a group known as DHKP-C had infiltrated the tower from within to carry out their lethal plan. It was a major story in the financial industry around the world, as a company leader had lost their life in such a tragic way. Shortly afterward, the company opened up an initial public offering, continuing to operate the way they had before.
Following their father’s death, Serra Sabanci and only sibling Demir Sabanci had taken spots on the board at Sabanci Holding, with Demir receiving a lot of business responsibilities. He held many positions as an executive, including working in retail and starting up several companies within the Sabanci umbrella. Demir is currently working as the chairman of Sedes Holdings, starting his own legacy.
Overall, the Sebanci family fortune has fluctuated in recent years, reaching as high as an estimated $30 billion. This has been a big benefit for Serra, who has an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, making her among the world’s youngest billionaires at 43 years old, especially when it comes to female billionaires. That massive fortune is certainly nothing to be scoffed at, and her brother is also estimated to have a high net worth as well, estimated to be around $3 billion to become one of Turkey’s richest people.
Sabanci herself has seen her net worth go up and down throughout the years, falling briefly out of the list of the world’s billionaires. Recent success has put her firmly back on the rankings, though, as she serves as a board member with the Sabanci Holding company. On top of that, Sabanci has been put in charge of the company’s charitable organization to give her even more notoriety.
Sabanci Holding now operates more than 60 companies within its group, with more than 60,000 employees spread out across the world. Everything from banking to textiles to insurance is covered within one of Turkey’s largest companies. The Sabanci family, including Serra, still hold more than 50 percent of the shares within the business which has helped them to become one of the country’s wealthiest families. It’s in Istanbul that you can find many of the executives such as Serra working, along with important executives such as Erol and Sevil Sabanci. The current CEO is Mehmet Gocmen, who’s not a member of the family.
There are also various companies that Serra Sabanci has been put in charge of, having used her degree from the Istanbul Bilgi University after graduating with honors. All in all, Sabanci has seen around two dozen boardrooms, working with many organizations. Since 2016, she’s acted as the director for Akcansa Cimento Sanayi, as well as the other executive positions.
At just 43, it’s expected that Sabanci’s business career will only grow within the family company over the years, which should also help her net worth. Several wealthy young women have joined the list of the world’s richest recently more than ever before, with Sabanci being among them. With Sabanci Holding continuing to acquire and start new companies, it appears that the potential is there for Serra to become one of the richest women in the world.
Though she still has a way to go to reach the likes of Francoise Bettencourt Meyers and Alice Walton who are listed as being worth over $40 million, the future appears bright. Many of the women within the world’s 10 richest women are well into the 50s, 60s or 70s, so Serra has plenty of time to catch up. As Turkey makes its way into the global economy more than ever, she certainly has a good chance of reaching the top 10.
