Daughter of Bernie Ecclestone
If you’re interested in high speeds, tight turns and unique looking supercars, then Formula One racing might be of interest to you. Over the past 40 years or so, Formula One went from sort of a niche market to a global empire with some of the biggest names in automaking attached. The man that was responsible for putting Formula One on the map internationally is Bernie Ecclestone, a long time executive that’s grown a massive net worth. This has helped his family live comfortably, including his three daughters with the middle daughter being Tamara Ecclestone.
Tamara’s father Bernie had wanted to be a Formula One driver himself, and got his start after World War II. After working in car parts, Ecclestone was driving in local circuits, and made just two entries into Formula One as a racer before having a handful of messy accidents. Deterred from racing, Ecclestone stayed in the business by becoming a team executive, eventually working his way up through the ranks. The popularity for Formula One grew, as did Ecclestone’s importance to the sport as he became the racing league’s CEO, growing membership to over 350 million people.
Before making it big as an executive, Ecclestone had married to a woman named Ivy, having his first daughter in the 1950s. Eventually, he would meet Yugoslavian model Slavica Radic, and the two became married shortly after it found out that Slavica was pregnant. The first of their two daughters together was Tamara, who was born on June 28, 1984 with sister Petra being born four years later.
There were a lot of eyes on Tamara growing up as the relationship that started between her parents created headlines on their own. After all, Bernie had been in a very long relationship when Slavica became pregnant with her, not to mention that Slavica stands a foot taller than her estranged husband. With that kind of attention, you had to figure that Tamara wasn’t going to be living the type of childhood that many of us had away from the spotlight.
That didn’t mean that the Ecclestones didn’t try to give her more of a normal life. Tamara said that her father got to where he was by valuing money. “I didn’t really understand the level of wealth I’d been born into until I was much older,” she said. “It’s not like I was getting dropped to school in a Lamborghini...and the house I grew up in is nowhere near as big as the one I live in now. My dad is very low key.”
When not traveling with her parents from city to city to make sure that Formula One was operating smoothly, Tamara grew up in London where she attended school. Upon finishing her primary education, Tamara then went to the London School of Economics hoping to achieve a degree in psychology. However, she transferred over to the University College of London, but never did finish the degree. Instead, Ecclestone focused her career on being in television.
At 22 years old, Ecclestone made her television debut by being one of the hosts for the Red Bull Air Race World Championships. That same year, she decided to enter the always entertaining world of reality television, becoming a contestant on “The Race”. Since then, Ecclestone has been featured on a number of reality shows and having host spots, including “Wall of Fame”, “Tamara Ecclestone: Billion $$ Girl”, “Tamara’s World” and “Loose Women”. While these gigs haven’t been high paying (save for an appearance in Playboy Magazine), Ecclestone is doing just fine for herself.
Tamara, along with her sister, is an heiress to her father’s fortune which is listed at $3.2 billion. Bernie Ecclestone has frequently been listed among the world’s billionaires for quite some time now, eclipsing the $4 billion net worth mark on multiple occasions. This included two stints at $4.2 billion in both 2011 and 2014. Though the family net worth had taken a hit in 2012, they’ve bounced back nicely to reach their current net worth that’s in the $3 billion range, putting them in the top 700 richest people in the world. Tamara hasn’t quite inherited the fortune yet, but is set to receive a massive payday from her nearly 90 year old father’s fortune.
Her father may have already been a grandfather far before Tamara had even considered having children, but he became a grandfather once again in 2014 when she had a daughter named Sofia. It’s her only child, which she had with husband Jay Rutland, whom she’s been married to since 2013 after having an engagement cancelled in the early 2000s. She’s also back in London where she spent much of her own childhood, dropping over $50 million on a home to add some nice assets to her net worth.
Ecclestone knows that her life has been filled with criticisms for many different reasons, whether it be for who her parents are, how much she’s worth or how she’s been able to catapult fame into a television career. “I don’t care what trash people talk about me on social media,” she said. “I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. People are going to throw all sorts of s*** at me whatever I say, so I may as well say something important. I get women coming up to me thanking me for inspiring them and that makes it all worthwhile.”
