One of the biggest film series of all-time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has helped to put many different stars on the map. One of the more notable actors that wasn’t quite well known before stepping into the MCU is Tom Hiddleston, who portrays the Asgardian Loki throughout the films.

Hiddleston was born on February 9, 1981 in London where he attended boarding school and had to go through his parents being divorced as a teenager. Hiddleston grew up in a middle class family when he was younger and said that it didn’t afford him any opportunities to become an actor, but he hopes to change that. “It’s socially divisive in a way it shouldn’t be, because I think wherever you are from you should be able to follow your passion,” he said. “Wherever you went to school, if you have something authentic to contribute, you should be allowed to.”

Hiddleston found himself at a pair of colleges after school, and while in college was very involved with stage acting. A talent agent contacted Hiddleston about getting on screen, allowing him to get his first role on television in 2001 when he was just 20 years old. Hiddleston was being used in small parts, and then appeared in his first movie in 2006 with the British film “Unrelated.”

TV would be the primary focus for Hiddleston over the course of the next few years, and then he made his switch to film on a full-time basis in 2010. His first role in this era was “Archipelago”, another British film. Then, in 2011, audiences all around the world were introduced to Hiddleston’s talents when he was cast as Loki, making his debut in the first “Thor” movie.

With Loki being a villain, Hiddleston wasn’t sure it would be a role that fans embraced him personally for, but he’s proven to fit into the role. “I feel so lucky with the writing,” Hiddleston said. “The way he’s been written as he is...was very poignant and you can see the vulnerability in him.” He added that “I’ve been quite fortunate with some beautifully complex writing of the character.”

The role was one that Hiddleston has played over the course of three different “Thor” standalone films, as well as the “Avengers” film series. All in all, the films have raked in billions of dollars at the box office and have made Hiddleston a star in his own right. The role allowed him to show his range as an actor with both comedy and drama, with a lot of action thrown in for good measure.

“I feel a huge sense that his is a character people care about,” he says. “It means a lot to me to deliver the character people know and love, but also to try my best to make sure I’m not just putting yesterday’s dinner in the microwave and reheating it; that I’m evolving the character, developing him and inventing new things for people to appreciate.”

Hiddleston was drawing attention for his work as Loki, and was able to land roles outside of the Marvel films, appearing in movies such as “Midnight in Paris”, “War Horse” and “The Deep Blue Sea”. Hiddleston has seen his stock rise in the past seven years or so, as he took a starring role in “Kong: Skull Island” and portrayed country singer Hank Williams in the biopic “I Saw the Light.”

That doesn’t mean that television has been out of the question for Hiddleston, as he’s appeared in a pair of Shakespearean television films and on the miniseries called “The Night Manager”, and even getting back on stage to play Hamlet. Still, if you ask most moviegoers, they’ll tell you the first role that comes to mind for Hiddleston is Loki.

Hiddleston has also drawn attention for his personal life, including the relationships he’s been in. None were more publicized, however, than the one he had with singer Taylor Swift. The break-up wasn’t one of her messier ones, though. Hiddleston said in an interview that “Taylor is an amazing woman. She’s generous and kind and lovely and we had the best time.” Having never been married, Hiddleston’s future relationships are likely to be just as interesting to the public.

“I’m still trying to work out a way of having a personal life and protecting it, but also without hiding,” he says. “A relationship in the limelight takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else.”

For now, the 37 year old is focused primarily on his work as an actor, as he’s far from finished. There are reports that he’ll be playing Loki again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though that remains to be seen. It could be the last time that Hiddleston suits up for the role, so it will be interesting for fans to see what he does next. Whatever it is, expect there to be much fanfare when it comes around.
