Little People, Big World
There was once a time when TLC used to stand for The Learning Channel, and the network spend most of its early time on educational programming. Eventually, when reality television started to become more popular ,TLC changed with the times and started to ingratiate more reality television into their programming, as well. One of the more popular series that TLC has produced in their reality era is “Little People, Big World”, which follows the Roloff family from Portland, Oregon, as the parents Amy and Matt have dwarfism, as well as their son Zach. Throughout the show, we saw Zach start a relationship with Tori Patton, who is now his wife.
“Little People, Big World” started in August 2010, which was right around the time that Tori was hired by the Roloff family to help work on the farm. Tori was hired to pick squash when she caught the eye of Zach, who told a co-worker that she thought Tori was “cute,” but was too afraid to say anything himself as he didn’t think a relationship would happen as he hadn’t had a girlfriend before. To his surprise, Tori wanted to set up a date, and it didn’t take long for the two to hit it off. “Our first date lasted five hours, and we’ve been together ever since,” she said.
While the presence of television cameras might have some thinking that Tori was more interested in being featured on a national network, it turned out that she didn’t want to be part of the TV experience to begin with. She told reporters that she and Zach are “such a unique pairing, and we have a really cool story to share, but (being on TV) was terrifying.” However, Tori says that it was beneficial in the long run, because “the show has helped me realize I shouldn’t worry about what other people think.”
Like any reality show, there are always going to be people that are critical of the members of the cast. Tori has been no exception since her relationship with Zach started, and some of it has to do with her spending habits. She’s been known to drop big money on a lot of items, especially since the cash keeps pouring in from the success of the reality series. When talking to his father Matt prior to their wedding, Zach said that Tori’s spending might be a “sore spot” in the future during their marriage.
Matt tried to downplay how much his future daughter-in-law was spending, telling Zach that he was simply frugal like his mother, Amy. Tori ended up having a lavish getaway for her bachelor party before the wedding, while Zach went out fishing with his father, where they had the discussion about finances. Despite some concerns about money, they didn’t let that get in the way of their relationship.
In July 2015, Zach and Tori were married, with their wedding being featured on TLC as part of the reality series. In late 2016, the couple then announced that they were expecting their first child, and gave birth to Jackson Kyle Roloff on May 12, 2017. There were rumors that the couple was expecting another child several months afterward, but those turned out to not be true. Because of the rumors, the two teased a gender reveal on social media, but in a humorous twist revealed that they were simply getting a dog.
Zach and Tori remain on “Little People, Big World”, as their lives continue to be showcased while raising their young son and now their precious dog. There was some concern that they wouldn’t remain on the show after some members of the family had left, but they put those concerns to rest in 2018. She announced that “We’re not going anywhere,” and that the two and their son would be featured on television. As for the main reason why they wanted to stay on television, Tori said that it was “Because we feel like we’re not done telling our story.”
After their son’s birth, Tori said that “We’re just so excited to show our baby boy the world. We can’t wait to take him on adventures, discover his personality, and what he likes to do best...Most of all, I just can’t wait to see Zach as a dad!”
The height difference between Tori and Zach hasn’t played a major factor into their relationship, at least when it comes to each other. When they take photos together, Tori is never hunched over, saying that “For me it feels weird to crouch and Zach always told me to stand,” she said. “I’m not trying to be shorter and he’s not trying to be taller.” The only impact that height has had, Tori says, is that she’s asked to “reach the high shelf a lot.”
Tori added that she and her husband own their height difference and embrace it. “I love my husband for his heart, not his height,” she said. “Love is love is love.”
